Autumn & Christmas Drink Reviews 2019 – #4
Irish Velvet Frostino – Costa
Good God. What a car crash. I’ve already had the Irish Velvet Latte (review in progress) and was somewhat pleased with it. This, however, was a catalogue of errors. It was so disappointing, in fact, that I am lost as to whether the failings were the fault of the barista, or the design of the drink.
The experience started poorly. Aside from the occasional addition of an alternative milk, I take all drinks as standard. Does it come with cream? If so keep it. Does it come with sprinkles? If yes, hit me up. This is so I can give you the the authentic review I know you deserve. I was asked if I wanted coffee in the drink – and as always I asked what came as standard, but I was told it was up to me. I was not given an answer even when I pushed, so I just went for coffee. However, this was an arduous moment of choice that I struggle with at the best of times.
Disappointingly, the Forest Hill Costa was out of cream this day, which is naturally one of the best bits of any drink, so I went without. However, I’m not sure if even cream could have saved this.
The hot latte was rich in flavour. You could tell it was emulating Baileys, and I was happy with the result (spoilers). However, there was no flavour here, aside from bitterness. The whole drink was just vaguely bitter. I’m not sure if they skimped on the flavour, but this was just a cup of cold, beige liquid. Not living up to your promises here, Costa. None of the nice warming caramel flavour promised. If you’re going to market an iced drink in the darkest depths of a climate crisis winter, it needs to be better than this disgrace.
2/10 – Unpleasant, finished it out of spite. Don’t recommend unless you’re a masochist.
